Caldwell County Criminal History Checks
No single file is a complete Caldwell County criminal history. The right first stop depends on whether the goal is to read a pending case, confirm an outcome, find recent custody, or review your own fingerprint-based state record. The North Carolina Judicial Branch offers a certified single-county name search through the clerk. It also allows free, non-certified searches at courthouse public terminals. The online eCourts Portal is useful for case leads, but the court system says a formal county check should come from the clerk.
Gather the full name, spelling variants, and date of birth when known. Those details help separate people with similar names. A case number is even better. Search results should then be matched to the court division, charge, filing date, and disposition. A blank online result is not conclusive because a case may be sealed, expunged, held in an older paper file, or mismatched during data conversion.
- Choose the source that fits the record: court, jail, sheriff report, or personal state review.
- Search with a full name or case number and narrow the location to Caldwell County.
- Compare the result with a date of birth, filing date, charge, and court division.
- Open the underlying case or request the agency report instead of relying on a list entry.
- Ask the clerk or repository for the official product when certification or fingerprint identity is needed.
Caldwell County Criminal Record Counters
Caldwell County records are split between two main public counters in Lenoir. The Clerk of Superior Court at the Caldwell County Courthouse handles District and Superior Court case files, certified name searches, public terminals, and copies. Sheriff Support Services on Morganton Boulevard handles sheriff incident and arrest reports, CAD reports, recordings, and fingerprint service. Going to the wrong office can add a trip without producing the desired record.
The official Caldwell County Courthouse page provides the court address and public contact details shown below.
The courthouse page confirms that court records are handled downtown rather than at the sheriff and detention complex.

Official Background Checks in North Carolina
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, Criminal Information and Identification Section, is the central repository for fingerprint-supported criminal history. It does not offer a public portal for searching anyone by name. An individual may obtain a copy of their own North Carolina record through the NCSBI Right to Review. The request uses a fingerprint card, a completed form, and a $14 certified check or money order. It is mailed to the SBI.
The official NCSBI personal-review page shows the distinct state and federal self-review routes.
That fingerprint route confirms identity in a way a Caldwell County name search cannot. A person who finds an error may submit the SBI written exception form. For an FBI Identity History Summary, the subject submits fingerprints and the federal $18 fee through the FBI process. Neither product is an open public people-search tool.
Caldwell County Sheriff Record Fees
Sheriff Records maintains the incident-reporting system and validates information used in FBI Index Crime reporting. Its public page describes in-person copies rather than an online report portal. Caldwell County publishes unusually clear prices for several records and services. Cash, check, Visa, and Mastercard are accepted at the counter. Fingerprinting is offered from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on business days.
The Caldwell Sheriff Support Services page is the source for the copy steps and fee schedule.
The posted menu distinguishes a $4 CAD report from a $10 audio recording, which are often mistaken for the same record.
| Product or service | Posted fee |
|---|---|
| Arrest, incident, attorney check, or CAD report | $4 each |
| Audio recording | $10 |
| In-county fingerprint service | $7 |
| Out-of-county fingerprint service | $15 |
| Notary service | $5 |
Kinds of Criminal Records
Different Caldwell County criminal records answer different questions. An arrest report describes an event handled by the arresting agency. The detention record is a custody snapshot. A clerk file follows the prosecution and can show later amendments, pleas, dismissal, trial, and sentence. NCSBI criminal history joins fingerprint-supported arrest cycles with reported outcomes at the state level. The sex offender registry is a separate statutory system, while NCDAC records track state custody and supervision.
- Arrest and incident records: held by the sheriff or city police agency that created the report.
- Booking records: current local custody data produced by Caldwell County detention staff.
- Court case files: District and Superior Court charges, events, hearings, outcomes, and sentences held by the clerk.
- Fingerprint history: statewide records maintained by NCSBI and available to the subject through Right to Review.
- Corrections and registry records: separate NCDAC and NCSBI public systems with their own legal purposes.
The detailed Caldwell County court case lookup follows the filed case rather than the initial allegation. That distinction matters whenever an arrest charge later changes.
Caldwell County Booking Records PDF
Caldwell County does not publish an interactive jail search. The official current-inmates link opens a generated Daily In Custody Report by Facility. It is alphabetical and can be searched with the browser's Find command. Entries may show a booking number, name, coded demographic fields, days in custody, booking time, current charge, agency, judicial status, case number, bond, court date, and District or Superior Court abbreviation.
The official Caldwell detention page links the live report and explains bond, visitation, and jail contacts.
The page is an entry point, not an archive. If a name leaves the PDF, call the jail, request an older arrest report from the proper agency, and check the court file for the case outcome. The PDF has no mugshot, exact date of birth, narrative, release date, or complete criminal history.
Note: A current custody entry shows detention status and allegations, not guilt or a final court result.
Caldwell County Criminal Records: What They Contain
A Caldwell County criminal record should be read in context. The eCourts summary can show a case number, filing date, status, assigned court, public parties and counsel, charges, events, dispositions, hearings, money data, and eligible document images. The jail record focuses on booking and custody. An SBI response focuses on fingerprint-supported cycles. No source should be assumed to include every field from the others.
| Name and identifiers | Public party name and limited identity data; fingerprints are the positive state-repository match. |
|---|---|
| Arrest and booking | Booking number, date, agency, current charge, bond, status, and court date where listed. |
| Charges and court events | Filed offenses, hearings, chronological events, assignments, and public documents. |
| Disposition | The outcome of each filed charge, such as dismissal, acquittal, or conviction. |
| Sentence | Active confinement, probation, restitution, or other terms ordered after conviction. |
| Custody or supervision | Separate county jail or NCDAC status, depending on where the person is held or supervised. |
- Disposition
- The recorded outcome of a charge or case.
- Register of actions
- The chronological list of events entered in the court file.
- Recognizance
- Release on a promise and conditions without secured money.
- Expunction
- A statutory process that removes qualifying public official records.
Caldwell County Criminal Cases in eCourts
Caldwell County joined the statewide North Carolina eCourts system on October 13, 2025, during the final Track 10 rollout. The change ended the old assumption that local court searching was courthouse-only. The North Carolina eCourts Portal now supplies free public online case information. Anonymous users can use Smart Search, Search Hearings, and NC Judgment Search. Registration is not required for a basic public search.
Smart Search accepts a party name or case number. Advanced filters can narrow results by Caldwell County, Criminal Actions, filing date, status, and other fields. Official wildcard rules require at least three letters plus an asterisk for a last name and at least one letter plus an asterisk for a first name. A free account can save cases, but it does not unlock sealed or restricted material.
| Portal field | How it helps a Caldwell search |
|---|---|
| Smart Search | Accepts party name or the formatted case number. |
| Location | Limits results to Caldwell County. |
| Case type | Select Criminal Actions instead of civil or estate matters. |
| Filing date | Narrows a broad name search to a useful period. |
| Search Hearings | Finds settings by case, party, attorney, judicial officer, or courtroom. |
Portal is not certified. When an online event looks wrong, when an older case is missing, or when a converted event shows a placeholder midnight time, use the public terminal or paper file and ask the clerk for the official record.
North Carolina Public Access Laws
North Carolina law separates open court files from protected police investigations. Clerk records are generally open during regular hours unless another law seals or restricts them. Chapter 132 broadly defines public records, but criminal investigation and criminal intelligence records are excluded from ordinary public status. Even so, the law requires release of specified basic facts about incidents, arrests, charges, and returned process, subject to other protections and temporary court orders.
Key North Carolina laws:
Chapter 132, Public Records Law sets the broad state framework for access to government records.
G.S. 132-1.4 protects investigation files while listing basic incident and arrest facts that are public.
G.S. 7A-109 makes clerk records open during regular hours unless access is barred by law.
G.S. 15A-146 governs expunction for qualifying dismissed and not-guilty matters.
Chapter 14, Article 27A governs sex offender registration and public registry duties.
A sheriff may release a public arrest-information sheet but withhold witness statements, photographs, or investigative attachments. A 911 recording also follows limits that differ from a CAD report. The record type and custodian control the answer.
Caldwell County Warrant Records Without a Portal
No official public Caldwell County active-warrant database was found. The direct county route is the Sheriff's Warrants line at 828-759-1552. The eCourts Portal can reveal the underlying case and events, but it is not a complete, real-time warrant list. The current jail PDF may show a failure-to-appear charge after an arrest, yet it cannot confirm every outstanding warrant.
Use a short chain: call Warrants, inspect the underlying court case, then contact the Clerk at 828-759-3500 or Magistrates at 828-759-3519 when the court record needs confirmation. For executed process, check current custody and request any permitted copy from the custodian. Never assume that making an inquiry prevents arrest. Caldwell County publishes no amnesty or safe-surrender promise.
The Sheriff Patrol Division page explains that deputies cover unincorporated Caldwell County plus Sawmills and Gamewell.
That jurisdiction detail helps identify the report custodian after a warrant is served or an incident is investigated.
Restricted, Sealed & Expunged Records
Juvenile cases, unreturned warrants, sealed files, and expunged records do not appear as ordinary public results. North Carolina uses the term expunction. Under G.S. 15A-146, a person or district attorney may seek relief in the county where a qualifying misdemeanor or felony charge was dismissed or ended in a not-guilty finding. Certain qualifying cases disposed on or after December 1, 2021 may receive relief by operation of law within the statutory period.
Expunction does not mean every related document vanishes from every system. Arresting agencies may keep investigative files even after public court and arrest entries are removed. Other provisions, including G.S. 15A-145.5, govern certain misdemeanor and felony convictions and impose separate exclusions and waiting rules. Petitions use approved forms and are filed with the Clerk of Superior Court. Eligibility depends on the precise case history.
When a valid case seems absent from eCourts, do not treat the blank screen as proof of expunction. A county filter, spelling issue, older paper record, or conversion mismatch can cause the same result. The clerk can distinguish an access problem from a legally restricted file.
Caldwell County Corrections Records Beyond Jail
The Caldwell current-inmates PDF covers local custody. It does not cover state prisoners or people supervised by the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction. The NCDAC criminal offender searches page routes readers to the Offender Public Information Search, NC SAVAN, absconder information, and related state tools.
The state locator includes prison, probation, parole, release, absconder, and historical information dating to 1972. It excludes Caldwell County jail custody.
A probation sentence first appears in the court disposition. Current public supervision data may then appear in the state locator. Field notes and officer observations should not be assumed public. Modern North Carolina sentences for offenses committed on or after October 1, 1994 generally use post-release supervision rather than parole, though the Post-Release Supervision and Parole Commission remains relevant to older-law parole and post-release matters.
City-by-City Criminal Records in Caldwell County
The largest incorporated places in Caldwell County are Lenoir, Granite Falls, and Hudson. Their police departments create city incident and arrest reports, but North Carolina has no separate city municipal-court system. Criminal and ordinance cases move into the unified District and Superior Court system through the Caldwell County clerk. A city record check therefore begins with the creating police agency, then follows any booking to county detention and any filed case to eCourts or the clerk.
Lenoir Record Check
2020 population 18,352. Lenoir Police has a records phone line, a city request form, and annual report archives.
Granite Falls Record Check
2020 population 4,965. Town police records use a direct request route, then county court and detention channels.
Hudson Record Check
2020 population 3,776. Hudson Police publishes a direct records email and town contact directory.
Caldwell County Criminal Records in Context
The NCSBI 2024 Annual Summary reports Caldwell County's index-crime rate at 1,895.3 per 100,000, down from 1,947.1 in 2023. The property-crime rate fell from 1,807.7 to 1,744.3. The violent-crime rate moved the other way, rising from 139.3 to 151.0. Index crime combines seven offense categories, and the SBI cautions that agency totals can vary with reporting methods and timing.
These rates describe reported offenses, not named people, court outcomes, or the chance that a given person has a record. Use them only as local context. Caldwell County's record system also reflects its geography: court files sit downtown, sheriff records and detention are southwest of downtown, and city police narratives remain with their own departments.
The county 911 Communications page shows how dispatch data can cross agency lines.
A single call may create a county CAD or audio record and a separate police narrative. Each must be requested from the custodian that holds it.
